Grab A Cup Of Joe

Hello bloggies!! Glad you all liked my enormous oreo sundae and eggy pizza. In case any of you want the recipe I did post it under the recipes tab Smile

I didn’t plan on posting today but I had a bit of a dispute yesterday on twitter so I decided I would address it. The issue was that coffee is “unclean”. Ok first off, food is only unclean if it touches the floor and even then I’ve been known to follow the 5 second rule Surprised smile  (I’m not dirty I promise). Foods should be addressed as being more or less nutrient dense. A clean diet is purely subjective. I might think chicken is clean while vegans and vegetarians clearly don’t.

I’ve been known to make a claim or two about things that I’ve been wrong about.

  • Eating after 6pm will make you fat
  • Eating carbs for dinner is a big no no
  • Spending less than an hour at the gym is useless

I’m glad I know better and I usually keep quiet about an issue I don’t know much about. This one sparked my interest because she clearly had no idea what she was babbling about.

What’s the first thing I drank today?

https://i0.wp.com/www.doobybrain.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/cup-of-coffee.jpgSource

And let me just say; it was dirty, sinful and quite delicious Winking smile

Now her argument was solely based on that caffeine was bad and yes this is true if you consume a pot of coffee a day. For people that consume a cup or two, not a big deal. Everything in moderation. Too much broccoli is bad, too much water is bad, too much peanut butter meat is bad. (I think pb is ok right?)

  • Blood pressure. Results from long-term studies are showing that coffee may not increase the risk for high blood pressure over time, as previously thought. Study findings for other cardiovascular effects are a mixed bag.
  • Cancer. Coffee might have anti-cancer properties. Last year, researchers found that coffee drinkers were 50% less likely to get liver cancer than nondrinkers. A few studies have found ties to lower rates of colon, breast, and rectal cancers.
  • Cholesterol. Two substances in coffee — kahweol and cafestol — raise cholesterol levels. Paper filters capture these substances, but that doesn’t help the many people who now drink non-filtered coffee drinks, such as lattes. Researchers have also found a link between cholesterol increases and decaffeinated coffee, possibly because of the type of bean used to make certain decaffeinated coffees.
  • Diabetes. Heavy coffee drinkers may be half as likely to get diabetes as light drinkers or nondrinkers. Coffee may contain chemicals that lower blood sugar. A coffee habit may also increase your resting metabolism rate, which could help keep diabetes at bay.
  • Parkinson’s disease. Coffee seems to protect men, but not women, against Parkinson’s disease. One possible explanation for the sex difference may be that estrogen and caffeine need the same enzymes to be metabolized, and estrogen captures those enzymes. Source

Coffee also supplies our body with antioxidants, more so than tea.

In a study that was performed results showed:

That the average adult consumes 1,299 milligrams of antioxidants daily from coffee. The closest competitor was tea at 294 milligrams. Rounding out the top five sources were bananas, 76 milligrams; dry beans, 72 milligrams; and corn, 48 milligrams. According to the Agriculture Department, the typical adult American drinks 1.64 cups of coffee daily. Source

Most Americans actually get most of their antioxidants from coffee (increase the veggies people!)

So again everything in moderation. Smile

Now if you excuse me while I munch on this while sipping my cup of joe

Warm oats topped with granola, reeses peanut butter chips, and cinnamon raisin pb

Peanut Butter in moderation? Hmm not today Winking smile

Are you a coffee drinker?

I LOVE coffee. It’s the one thing I look forward to in the morning – maybe even more than breakfast. I don’t drink it all day long, I don’t have any health issues that warrant against it. I think I am slightly addicted though – I get a headache without my usual cup!

Oh coffee, my one true love (along with bananas, almond butter, oatmeal, and chocolate of course…). I gave up coffee for a while because of the whole coffee debate thing, but I honestly don’t see a reason I should deprive myself of something I love just because… well… just because nothing, really. There’s nothing wrong with drinking coffee in moderation, and having my daily cup in the morning is something I always look forward to. I think coffee is only harmful if you drink like 8 cups a day… but then again, you can go overboard with anything. I’m pretty sure broccoli could even make you sick if you eat pounds of it a day 😉

    A few things
1.) peebs should never be eaten in moderation. It’s a food group.
2.) I dislike arguments, I’m sorry you had to face one! it’s always hard to disagree with somebody stubborn, especially in less than 140 characters.
3.) Moderation is key always always always. I am slowly learning how I can treat myself in little ways every day without the food guilt because it is in MODERATION!
    4.) Great evidence and facts! Always the best support (;

I personally don’t drink coffee, especially the stuff at starbucks because it’s loaded with calories. I hate stuff that tastes like coffee :/ So I stick with smoothies and my obsession with tea (:

It seems like every other month a study comes out either tauting the benefits of coffee or suggesting it causes harm. My thought is that people have been drinking it for centuries, so it can’t be that bad. It’s actually quite delicious 🙂

I love coffee but only allow myself to indulge about once a week. But not because it’s “dirty” because it turns me into a crazy woman. Once the caffeine wears off I want more, or lots or food or sugar! So I found it best to indulge in it.

I will never give up my coffee, I just love it way to much and can hardly function without it. At least now I don’t feel as bad 🙂

WHAT? How silly. Coffee beans grow in nature and the process of roasting them is fairly ‘clean’. I will NEVER give up my coffee because I think the benefits outweigh any negatives. Does that mean I’ll drink it all day every day. No, I’ll have my mug in the morning and that’s it….or maybe a Starbucks treat in the afternoon.

    So silly.

I completely agree, everything in moderation! What some people don’t realize is that although my blog is called “The Foodie Diaries”, I’m not pretending that I’m a health nut. In fact, I’m not. Just because I enjoy reading healthy living/vegetarian/etc blogs doesn’t mean that I choose to live my life that way. Instead of “healthy living” I think of myself as living with a healthy balance. I eat foods that are NOT considered healthy, but I do so in moderation. I love healthy recipes, I love fattening recipes, I love recipes that will possibly make your arteries get clogged (okay, maybe too far 😉 ). The point is, I love FOOD. Period. 🙂

And coffee is delicious, and if you can go your whole life without a cup in the morning than WOW, but most people need that pump of caffeine 🙂

I agree that moderation is the key principle. Eat and drink what is tasty for you and what you enjoy, but don´t over do it. Even too much apples are just TOO MUCH apples 🙂
