Eating For Health

Ok let’s start off with the basics. I LOVE food, all kinds, I’m not very biased. Most people assume that I don’t eat or that I don’t enjoy the pleasures of eating a warm fresh out of the oven Krispy Kreme donut.

https://i0.wp.com/cdn.woldcnews.com/files//2009/09/krispy-kreme-doughnuts.jpg

If there’s one girl who cannot give up sweets, its me (and most of you ;)). A warm brownie topped with ice cream, a cookie that’s soft on the inside, a decadent creamy cheesecake, it makes my face light up. Most people abuse the privilege of eating, that’s when it becomes a problem. It doesn’t take much to pack on some serious pounds. Sure genetics may help keep you thin, while you put down cheeseburger after cheeseburger, but in reality what’s the need? Does it make you feel good and satisfied? My mom use to take me to McDonalds everyday after school. I always ordered the same thing: a cheeseburger, fries, and a milkshake. If I only knew how many calories I was consuming on that meal alone.

It doesn’t take long to start seeing that extra bulge that wasn’t there before. That’s when people start to diet. If there’s one word I hate (after toned), it’s diet. It sounds like some sort of torture where you must eat less than 1400 calories or else. It becomes a contest to see how little calories you can eat each day without possibly passing out.

“You ate 1000? Please I ate 500, you need more will power if you want to be thin”

As soon as you start seeing the weight come off, it becomes natural to think you’re doing it right while you deprive your body of all the nutrients it needs. This is the trap of the diet. You eat crap, you gain weight. You eat less crap, you lose weight. Once you’ve reached your “goal” weight which is usually lower than what you said you were going to be then the old eating habits start creeping back. McDonalds for breakfast, Wendys for lunch, BK for dinner.

As a society I’ve come to realize that people don’t eat healthy for nutrition, they do it for body image. I changed my eating habits because I put on some weight but I still eat that way because it’s what my body needs to feel good and to work efficiently. Most people don’t understand the concept. Having McDonalds because you reached your goal weight churns my stomach. Eat a real damn burger, not some mystery meat. I prefer my food over restaurant food any day of the week. I enjoy food more than 90% of people who take it for granted. Eating at a fancy restaurant is a gift to myself, not just a regular occurrence.

I eat veggies, fruits, and whole grains because it gives me the minerals, vitamins, and EFA’s to keep my body running. This isn’t a path to weight loss for me because once you reach it, most people don’t know where to go. Eat for health and you’ll never go wrong. And for that those people who said oatmeal is disgusting, I might have to reconsider our friendship πŸ˜‰

OIAJ

Made with oats, flax, 1/3 nanner, 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk,

2/3 cup water, cinnamon

Topped with walnuts, raisins, bunnies!

Banana Bread Oatmeal

Made with oats, flax, 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk, 2/3 cup water,

1/3 nanner cinnamon, & 1/3 of a Western Cinnamon bagel

Topped with peanuts, graham cracker, Back to Nature granola, and cinnamon raisin pb

Now please tell me you don’t like oatmeal πŸ™‚

  • Do you find that most people start eating healthy for the wrong reasons?

I definitely started eating healthy for the wrong reasons (completely to be skinny) but after going through everything that came with that, I have begun to eat healthy to live a long life and be fit- not skinny.

YES! YES! YES! I hate hate hate the word diet! It makes my blood boil! I find that most people I talk to are looking for a short term fix. They don’t realize that they need to make a lifestyle change, and that the process should be slow and steady. I’m hoping healthy living blogs change the world’s view on the term diet. πŸ˜‰

Absolutely. I feel like most people simply eating healthy to lose weight will never make it a lifestyle and therefore gain whatever they lose. Those who eat healthy for the right reasons have more chance for success in the long run but getting to that point and appreciating your body and what it can do, does not always come easy, at least it didn’t for me and it still hasn’t for many of my friends

I cannot tell you how many people I talk to about nutrition that flat out tell me that food cannot influence their health. Uhh what? haha it gets me EVERY time.

I absolutely love this post! Eating healthy should never only be about losing weight. I do understand how someone who’s overweight would want to switch to a healthy diet in order to lose weight, but that decision should be about health as well, not just body image, and they shouldn’t resort back to old eating habits just because they reached a goal weight. Personally, I love the way eating healthy makes me feel and wouldn’t switch to a diet of doughnuts and fries even if it wouldn’t effect your weight at all (although in moderation, things like that are definitely okay πŸ˜‰ )

When I started losing weight two years ago, I wasn’t eating very healthy but my portions were tiny, and I did lose weight. Great post Jen!! Yes I do believe that for the majority, people eat healthier for image purposes. Now, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that–and we all DO have an INKLING of that I’m sure. But, I think that the further we grasp the concept of wholeness and true physical health, then it’s hard to go back to eating bad foods all the time. Moderation sometimes is good, but our bodies (at least mine, along with my aching stomach) will be able to feel the difference in digestion, efficiency, energy, and so forth. πŸ™‚ It’s interesting because my body progresses into wanting to eat better and better. <33

I didnt want to be in class with them b/c i knew why they were in that class in the first place! Ive moved past it now b/c maybe those classes changed the way they look at food, maybe it fixed their obsession with being thin. hopefully?

healthy eating can be just as calorie dense as unhealthy eating if you don’t do it right. but ohhhh the nutrition benefits of a balanced diet! fantastic =) I feel better eating healthy ❀

Like you mentioned, eating well less than 1000 calories a day. I thought I was doing it right when the pounds started to shed and didn’t pay attention to the lack of nutrients at all, calories were my only concern. I’m so much happier and healthier now that I eat when I’m hungry, listen to my body, and down nutrient-dense food. πŸ™‚

I totally agree with the health food thing! It also makes me angry when people tell me that I eat healthy to be thin. Just because I eat fruits, veggies, whole grains and nut butters versus Burger King does not mean I’m on a mission to be thin. It’s all about a healthy lifestyle & feeling great!

I LOVE this post! When I tell people what I eat/that i’m a vegetarian, they automatically assume that I want to lose weight and go on a huge rant about how I don’t need to etc. but that is most definitely NOT why I eat the way I do! I eat healthily because I like the way these foods make me feel!
And… what? Some people dont like oatmeal…?!
